The HMS Loo was a 44-gun British Royal Navy frigate that ran aground on the reef in early 1744 while towing a captured Spanish ship. The wreck gave Looe Key Reef its name. Resting in 20 to 25 feet of water on the eastern reef flat, the site features heavy iron anchors, chains, and ballast stones that have become cemented into the coral structure over the centuries.
