The Mystery Wreck is the ballast pile of an unidentified 19th-century sailing vessel resting on top of a small patch reef in Hawk Channel off Marathon. Resting on a 28-foot sandy floor, the ballast stones rise to within 8 feet of the surface, creating an ideal snorkeling depth. The crevices in the ballast rocks are packed with spiny lobsters, grunts, and snappers.
