Tonawanda Shipwreck

The Tonawanda (originally the USS Arkansas, a Civil War blockader and supply ship) was a 191-foot wooden screw steamer launched in 1863 that ran aground on Elbow Reef in 1866. Today, the wreck lies in 10 to 15 feet of water. Divers and snorkelers can explore 51 feet of the steam engine's heavy iron bedding platform and coal bunkers, which are now home to brain corals, sea fans, and schools of yellowtail.
