⚓
ANCHORAGE

Nassau West Bay

Nassau

Nassau West Bay fronts the Cable Beach resort strip , Nassau's main hotel and resort corridor to the west of the capital. The anchorage in the bay provides good access to the resort amenities while maintaining open water sailing and good sand holding. The Melia Nassau Beach, SLS Baha Mar, and Baha Mar Casino complex are all fronted by the beach here. The bay is, however, open to the north , northers in November, April make this a dangerous anchorage and immediate departure to the enclosed Nassau Harbour or Coral Harbour is essential on any norther forecast. In settled weather with S or E winds, this is a pleasant anchorage with easy beach access. The Bahamas' 0.8m tidal range creates a perceptible current along the beach as the tide runs.

⚓
ANCHORAGE

Balmoral Island Anchorage

Nassau

Balmoral Island is a small privately-operated beach resort north of Nassau , the classic Bahamian private island experience. The south anchorage provides excellent NE trade wind protection with beautiful turquoise water and sand holding. Cruise ship day-trippers visit the beach by tender during the day, creating activity and noise until late afternoon, after which the anchorage becomes quiet. The 0.8m tidal range creates a noticeable current around the island as the tide runs. Nassau Harbour is 1.5nm to the south for provisioning and fuel. This anchorage offers the quintessential Nassau compromise , within reach of urban facilities but with a genuine Bahamian out-island feel. The north Bahamian bank here is clear and shallow , excellent snorkelling in settled conditions.

ANCHORAGE

Nassau Yacht Haven

Nassau

Nassau Yacht Haven is the primary facility marina for cruising yachts in Nassau , the best-equipped facility on New Providence for visiting foreign vessels clearing customs. The marina has 150+ berths, fuel (gasoline and diesel), fresh water, electricity (US 110V/220V), showers, laundry, WiFi, and a dockside bar and restaurant. Customs and immigration clearance is routinely handled at the marina. The approach anchorage east of the marina breakwater is free and provides good holding in sand and mud. Nassau Yacht Haven is the recommended first stop for any vessel entering the Bahamas through Nassau , close to downtown provisioning, the Nassau Airport (15 minutes by taxi for crew changes), and with 24-hour security. The 0.8m tidal range means depths at the marina entrance shoal slightly at low water; draft over 1.5m should confirm berth depth with the dock master.

⚓
ANCHORAGE

Athol Island Anchorage

Nassau

Athol Island sits in the approach to Nassau Harbour , a small, mostly private island that creates a useful anchorage in the channel between it and New Providence's north shore. The anchorage offers the Bahamas' characteristic turquoise water and sand holding with easy access to Nassau for provisioning and customs. The island itself is private (formerly an oceanographic institute) but the surrounding waters are open. The anchorage benefits from good NE trade wind protection from the island mass while maintaining clear access to the harbour for dinghy runs. The 0.8m Nassau tidal range requires careful depth planning. Nassau's cruise ship traffic passes east of the anchorage , less wake than the main harbour but still audible in season.

⚓
ANCHORAGE

Silver Cay Anchorage

Nassau

Silver Cay is a small manmade island on Nassau's north shore, originally developed as a resort facility. The anchorage in the lee of Silver Cay offers convenient proximity to Nassau Harbour facilities while providing some protection from northerly winds. The holding is fair due to weed patches on the sandy bottom , the anchor should be set with care and tested before leaving the boat. The 0.8m tidal range is critical in these shallow waters. The anchorage is open to the northeast , in the prevailing NE trade winds, some chop enters. Best used in settled conditions or when NW-W winds prevail (often behind cold fronts). Close to Nassau Yacht Haven for fuel, water, and provisioning. Not the most comfortable anchorage but useful for short-term stays near Nassau.

⚓
ANCHORAGE

Montagu Bay

Nassau

Montagu Bay is the eastern anchorage area of Nassau Harbour , far quieter than the main harbour, free from cruise ship wake, and with reliable sand holding in a broad, shallow bay. The bay fronts Montagu Beach, one of Nassau's local beaches popular with Bahamians, and is close to the Montagu Foreshore area with its local restaurants and fish frys. Fort Montagu (18th century British fort, now a small historic park) overlooks the bay from the headland. The anchorage is favoured by longer-stay cruisers who want Nassau's provisioning access without the central harbour's commercial noise and traffic. Nassau Yacht Haven marina is 1.2nm west for fuel and water. The 0.8m tidal range is very apparent in the shallower water here , plan anchoring depths carefully.
